History
On the 19th August, 1979 an informal gathering of cake decorators was held at the home of Mrs Bernice Vercoe of Castle Cove, NSW.
The reason of this meeting was to discuss the possibility of forming a body of experienced cake decorators and in this way, create an avenue which would allow experienced decorators to share their expertise with their peers and also encourage new and interested decorators to participate and expand their knowledge.
The suggestion met with enthusiasm and unqualified approval from the assembled ladies and so the foundation of what was later to become known as the Cake Decorators’ Guild of NSW was laid.
The ladies who were in attendance at this inaugural meeting became the foundation members of the guild:
- Iris Adam
- Veronica Bagley* (Sydney Life Member)
- Jan Boon
- Daphne Buff
- Pamela Davenport
- Dorothy Evans* (first Sydney Life Member)
- Nancye Kelly*
- Effie Kerr
- Thelma Kerr
- Marilyn Lock
- Mary Lynas
- Barbara Lynch
- Colleen Mahoney
- Judith Merlin (nee Bisley)
- Patricia Simmons*
- Lorraine Sorby-Howlett
- Marie Sykes*
- Margaret Tesoriero
- Bernice Vercoe* (Founder and State Patroness).
A unanimous vote was recorded for the word “guild” because of its literal meaning “society for mutual aid or prosecution of common object”.
From this small beginning, work of the guild’s aims spread rapidly with the result that membership now extends throughout the State of New South Wales, Australia.
* These members have since passed away.
